The College and Graduate School of Art’s Gallery Director works closely with the Director of the College & Graduate School of Art to develop and support exhibitions in an off-campus gallery space, facilitate and manage off-site exhibitions, and provide students with opportunities to experience the operations of a professional gallery. The Gallery Director serves as a representative of the Sam Fox School and the College and Graduate School of Art to promote the gallery within the community. The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at WashU in St. Louis is a unique collaboration in architecture, art, and design education within the context of an internationally recognized research university. Comprising the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design, the College and Graduate School of Art, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum, the Sam Fox School offers a depth of professional education in conjunction with one of the premier university art museums. The School has a strong commitment to social justice, environmental justice, and community-based work, and supports a diverse population of approximately 200 graduate students and 530 undergraduates. This is an annual ten-month position, with June and July off. Primary Duties & Responsibilities: The Gallery Director works closely with the Director of the College & Graduate School of Art and faculty to support curricular exhibitions and develop external exhibitions and programs fostering high levels of engagement among faculty, students, artists, alumni, the community, and other constituencies. Responsible for coordinating and collaborating on all aspects of planning, executing, installing, documenting, and archiving exhibitions, including working with artists and curators; coordinating shipping, delivery, storage, and professional art handling; maintaining insurance, consignment forms and budgets; coordinating the sale of artwork when applicable; and working with the appropriate offices/personnel on campus when necessary. This position works at an off-campus gallery location. Works with students to provide opportunities for a professional gallery experience through the coordination of various exhibitions, including undergraduate area/major shows, graduate exhibitions, student-proposed projects and outside exhibitions. The Director is available to undergraduate and graduate students for studio visits, to advise on gallery and exhibition strategies, and train interested students in museum-standard art handling practices, procedures and curatorial methods. Responsible for daily administrative duties to include social media, training and supervision of gallery staff and working with outside vendors; maintenance of facilities, including exhibition space, office, storage area, catering kitchen, restrooms, and loading dock. The Director is responsible for the purchase, maintenance, storage and inventory of gallery tools, supplies and equipment. Works with Sam Fox School Communications Office and University Public Affairs to maintain visibility in local and national press and engage in outreach activities. The Gallery Director is responsible for helping to produce press releases, publications, pursuing media coverage, and maintaining social media, the website, in addition to conducting tours, and planning gallery talks, exhibition receptions, and other events. Participate in faculty/staff meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Off-campus Gallery Environment: Typically sitting at desk or table. Occasional lifting 25-50 lbs. Unloading and managing freight if needed. Repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement. Work is performed in a multi-level office building, use of stairs.
