As a Pharmacy Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians with daily tasks and activities, ensuring efficient pharmacy operations, and providing excellent customer service. This role requires a willingness to learn, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.

Job Activities: the activities listed below are subject to change.

  • Prescription Medication Preparation:
    • Assist in the compounding of medications according to provided formulas.
    • Weigh and measure ingredients and suitable capsules following Quality Assurance & Control measures.
    • Count, package, and label prepared compounds in suitable dispensing tools, as directed by Pharmacists.
    • Verify and confirm the beyond-use date on the patient’s product labels.
    • Affix prescription labels to prepare prescriptions for pharmacist verification.
  • Customer Service & Communication:
    • Greet customers and provide excellent customer service.
    • Answer and direct phone calls.
    • Make outgoing calls to schedule medication deliveries, mailings, and obtain proper billing and demographic information, as well as update patient history information.
    • Demonstrate courteous and professional interpersonal communication skills towards customers, physicians, supervisors, and employee associates.
  • Operational Support:
    • Assist the shipping department in packaging prescription orders.
    • Verify addresses and medications to ensure accuracy.
    • Organize, pack, and ship medications to ensure timely delivery.
    • Order and manage supplies necessary for pharmacy operations.
    • Stock and organize storage areas efficiently.
    • Maintain and restock inventory as needed.
    • Transfer large cases of ice from storage to the shipping area.
    • Perform daily cleaning and log maintenance following established policies.
    • Assist in maintaining proper calibration of all equipment, including freezer/fridge temperatures and weights on scales at the workstation.
    • Perform basic housekeeping duties, including vacuuming, sweeping floors, disposing of trash, and dusting shelves.
    • Conduct cash register sales.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance:
    • Execute quality assurance procedures on randomly sampled scripts and document the results following established standards.
    • Accept prescriptions for filing, gathering, and processing necessary information.
    • Adhere to company health and safety policies and procedures.
    • Work under the supervision of a pharmacist and adhere to role restrictions (no performing duties of pharmacists or technicians).
  • Teamwork & Professional Development:
    • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with all staff, suppliers, and clients.
    • Attend staff meetings and safety meetings, as requested.
    • Attend relevant workshops and other learning opportunities to enhance knowledge and foster professional growth.
    • Contribute to improving company processes and standards.
    • Demonstrate strong organization, time management, and attention to detail.
    • Ability to excel while performing multiple tasks with proficiency.
    • Ability to work as a team in a fast-paced environment and find solutions to complex issues.

Skills, Education and Experience: The following lists the minimum or desired skills, education and experience required for the role of Pharmacy Assistant:

  • Education & Experience:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
    • No direct pharmacy experience is required; training will be provided.
    • One year of prior retail/customer service experience preferred.
    • 18 years of age or older required.
    • Ability to obtain a State Pharmacy Assistant license.
    • Experienced in the use of prescription management and/or shipping software, systems, and tools.
    • Basic pharmacy knowledge preferred (on-the-job training provided).
    • Basic Microsoft Office knowledge.
  • Key Skills:
    • Effective oral and verbal communication with co-staff, pharmacists, and the public.
    • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
    • Strong ability to perform optimally in a team setting.
    • Must demonstrate courteous and professional interpersonal communication skills.
    • Must be able to quickly and accurately perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, and dollars.
    • Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend conversational English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods with frequent walks of short distances and stairs.
  • Capable of lifting up to 40 pounds as needed (from floor to chest occasionally, 5-7 lbs from floor to 7 feet frequently).
  • Must be able to bend or stoop to stock shelves below waist level frequently and to remove merchandise. Crouching, twisting, and pivoting at the waist, as well as kneeling or squatting to reach low shelves, is often required.
  • Frequent repetitive hand movements and fine finger manipulation are required to operate the cash register and computer.
  • Proficient in using a computer and related equipment, including printers and fax machines.
  • Effective communication skills via telephone and email.
  • Perform duties while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Pharmacy attire is required and provided.
  • Other duties as assigned.
